Passage: Colossians 1:24
Series: Colossians (2011)
Duration: 53 mins 43 secs
Can believers truly find joy in the midst of adversity? Does the Bible spell out the mechanics of joy? As we continue to study this verse in Colossians, we learn that true joy is a process, a culmination of growth which is only fully realized when we reach spiritual maturity. Until then, our life is really sub-normal. Spiritual joy differs from the joy we think of coming from circumstances or our own personalities.

In this lesson, we learn the difference between Christ's sufferings on the cross and His afflictions. We learn that His afflictions, while not redemptive, did set a pattern of how we are to face adversity in our own lives. As we grow and apply learned doctrine and walk and abide in Him, spiritual joy results from the Holy Spirit producing character qualities above and beyond personality or circumstances, which is why believers can have joy in the midst of the adversities of life.

"Don't come preaching that and take away my business," was the strident cry of a frenzied, mindless mob in Ephesus. This ancient city was renowned for its pagan worship of the goddess Diana and the practice of the occult black arts. Listen to this lesson to learn that many Ephesians, however, listened to Paul and accepted the Lord Jesus. Hear how they brought their expensive books of magic and incantations to be burned. See how cultures can change for the better or worse depending on what people believe. Find out how Paul took the time to train young men such as Timothy and Erastus for the ministry.

How is it possible that Christians are called "sons of light" and then described as walking in darkness? Listen to this lesson to learn how the Bible uses light and darkness. See that at the moment we believe in Christ as our Savior we become sons of light permanently. Understand what happens when we sin after that. Accept the importance and necessity for confessing our sins so we can once again walk by the Spirit.

Do you walk as a wise person or as a fool? You’re always doing one or the other. They are mutually exclusive. See that the opposite condition is walking in darkness. Learn the importance of confession, its connection to the filling of the Spirit in Ephesians 5:18, and the correct interpretation of 1 John 1:7-9. What does it mean to be purified? Listen to this lesson to see that Peter in this passage is referring to the purification that takes place when someone accepts Christ as their Savior, but in some other places in Scripture it refers to confession of sin after salvation. Find out that after being purified believers are to love one another in a consistent, steadfast manner.
